Rohit Sharma has been the talk of the town since he has been removed as Mumbai Indians captain ahead of the IPL auction for the 2024 season. He has been replaced by Hardik Pandya as MI skipper but according to the reports from Sports Today, Delhi Capitals (DC) earlier approached Mumbai Indians for Rohit’s trade but MI rejected the offer.
Sunil Gavaskar suggests Hardik Pandya’s appointment will bring a fresh approach. He highlighted Rohit Sharma’s perceived fatigue and recent batting struggles in IPL. Despite Sharma and Dhoni’s IPL success, Mumbai Indians’ recent performance decline prompted the change, Gavaskar said.
Why Mumbai Indians replaced Rohit Sharma as captain?
Mumbai Indians (MI) have undergone a significant change in leadership, with Hardik Pandya stepping into the role of captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. In a recent interview with JIO Cinema, Mahela Jayawardene, the global head of cricket for MI, shed light on the challenging decision-making process and the franchise’s commitment to building a strong future.
Mahela Jayawardene, acknowledging the emotional response from the fans, stated, “It was a tough decision. It was emotional, to be honest. It’s fair on the fans as well (to react). I think everyone is emotional and we have to respect that as well. But at the same time, as a franchise, you have to make those decisions.”
Despite the change in leadership, Jayawardene assured fans that Rohit Sharma would continue to play a vital role in the team, both on and off the field. “Having Rohit in the team, on and off the field to guide the next generation is very important for us. He has been absolutely brilliant. I am sure he will be part of the legacy who will guide that through,” Jayawardene affirmed.
Jayawardene highlighted Pandya’s familiarity with the MI dressing room and his leadership experience at Gujarat as key factors in his selection. “Hardik (Pandya) has been in the dressing room for quite some time, so that’s nothing new. We know what he brings in as an all-rounder. It will be something different with his experience of leading the team at Gujarat, so, it is an opportunity to build on that,” Jayawardene added.
