German-born American actor Christian Oliver, who starred in films with Tom Cruise and George Clooney during a 30-year career, died along with his two daughters in a plane crash off the coast of the Caribbean island on Thursday. Officials from the Royal Saint Vincent and Grenadines Police force said the plane – which was en route to nearby Saint Lucia – suffered  unspecified difficulties at certain moments of flight and then fell into the sea. Fishermen, divers and members of the country’s coast guard landed at the crash site, and military personnel were able to recover the bodies of the four people on board. He was taken to St Vincent where a post-mortem will be conducted in the coming days.

Oliver’s two daughters: 10-year-old Madita Klepser and 12-year-old Annick Klepsar, also lost their lives in the crash west of Petit Nevis on the banks of Bequia, police said in a statement shared on Facebook. The pilot, Robert Sachs, also died. Police said the plane left JF Mitchell Airport at Paget Farm in Baquia en route to St Lucia, a popular tourist destination in the Caribbean, at  12:11 p.m. local time.

“Moments after taking off, the aircraft faced difficulties and fell into the sea,”officials said. The press reported that the cause of the crash was not immediately clear and that police have launched an investigation. The four bodies were taken to Kingstown Morgue,  which will conduct a “postmortem investigation” to uncover the victims’ cause of death.
