Crystal Palace were optimistic for their third consecutive domestic Premier League win. Manager Roy Hodgson had handed Adam Wharton and Matthias Franca’s first start to the league. Daniel Munoz also started with his first match at Selhurst Park. Jordyn Ayyu reached the end of a high free-kick from Chris Richards Will Hughes as he tested the handling of Jordje Petrovic in the Chelsea goal with a sharp turn and strike from a distance after five minutes. But could not direct his header to the target.

While visitors enjoyed more possession in the early stages, the Palace had better penetration on the counter, curling through Franca’s ball  not far from setting Jean-Philippe Matteta in the goal but getting a little overhit.

There was definitely a slow pace in the opening quarter of the match, but Crystal Palace continued to enjoy better opportunities. A slow back-pass from Malo Gusto gave Mattetta a chance to shoot from a tight angle, but his location failed to actually test Petrovic.

The club with the Palace’s 1000th top-flight goal wrote names in folklore and some style. Tyrique Mitchell and Lerma teamed up to take over Moises Cascedo. The Colombian took a touch inward and set his gaze. Made the most sensational attacks from a distance of 30  yards, diving beyond Petrovic’s disappointing dive and finding the top corner. It was no more than Palace worth, while Chelsea enjoyed  79  percent possession at one point in the first half. The Palace limited them to only one occasion when Gallagher pulled away from Noni Maduce’s slipped pass.

Regret came when Chelsea improved after the break and the dice began to turn. After a long delay due to the difficulty in the team, the visitors scored by putting their first shot on target. Moving from behind, Gusto’s pull-back found Gallagher on the penalty spot and the midfielder dropped a half-volley into the house. Le gave Chelsea confidence and, moments later, Thiago Silva’s near-post header was roundbound,  before Mattetta intervened. Then, Cole Palmer cut in and hit a sharp shot into the side-netting.

Yet Palace weathered that storm, with Franca combining well with Mattetta and playing a complex slide-rule pass,  which caused the forward to block a shot on the slide by Silva. After a great start to the second half, the next 10 minutes were more difficult, but Chris Richards consistently made head clearances and Munoz did well in securing the win over a fierce Cassido cross.

In the 75th  minute, one such pass found Franca 30 yards from  goal, and her determined effort forced Petrovic to beat the ball with both hands. The game arrived in a time of injury, sad for Palace –  and also from a familiar source, when a Palmer pull-back knocked out Gallagher on the edge of the box,  and he threw a lesser winner into the lowest corner. The scoreline added unwanted flashes when Palmer led another counter-attack, with Enzo Fernández checking in and finding the top corner.
